“We make our rosé as infusion, it is like tea ceremony. I am not interested in the color, I am interested to get fruitiness and freshness. This rosé can be different each year, that’s why it is a vintage”. So is talking Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, Cellar Master of Champagne Louis Roederer while serving us Louis Roederer Vintage Rosé 2010 in Bulevard Lundy 21 in Reims.

Louis Roederer 2010 Vintage Rosé seduced me at first tasting and I find it as creamy, fine and charming as it was one year ago. It gives me the impression of elaborated elegance, a characteristic of Roederer style.

It is a rose of 7 years age. This explains the orange hints in the color and aromas of cacao and dried fruits which complete the bouquet. The fine pearls column enliven the wine in the glass while on the palate it exhibits aromas of forest fruits, white fruits and citrus.   It is the result of a blend of 62% rosé wine made from Pinot Noir from southern exposed vineyards of Cumières and Chardonnay 38% from Chouilly

A remarkable champagne, fresh, with discrete complexities. I simply love it.

Rosé champagne is obtained by blending red or rose wine with white wine. Champagne is the only region in the world where the rosé wine can be made by adding red wine to white wine. Otherwise rosé is produced legally in the world from red grapes only. To make this rosé Roederer uses saignée method, the infusion Jean Baptiste was talking about. The grapes of Pinot Noir are picked up in a dry afternoon and kept over the night at low temperature. The day after the grapes go in a maceration tank where, for 5 to 8 day, they are soaking at low temperature to extract aromas while avoiding bitterness from the skin and seeds. The must is than drained and mixed with the white wine from Chardonnay to continue fermentation together.

To reach optimum maturity the blend matured for a notable period of 4 years in on the lees and for another 6 months after disgorgement in the cellars.

In Romania you can find Champagne Roederer at Comenzi Sampanie. Ro, in the Comtesse du Barry stores in Cluj and Bucharest. Rosé Vintage 2010 can be ordered at Envie de Champagne.
